the scent of coco mademoiselle perfume on the soft fabric of ivan's baby blue pillow case became a custom to wake up to every morning for the last nine months. there wasn't a day in the last two years ivan could remember not smelling that familiar fragrance he discovered to love so much. "good morning, sunshine." a sweet, musical voice spoke just barely above a whisper from beside him. a goofy grin spread across the boy's face as he rolled onto his side, propping himself up on his elbow to look down at his fiancé. cassie wore a mane of ebony hair sprawled out across the blue sheets of their bed that complimented the tone of her flawless skin. every feature of her round face was highlighted by the rays of sunshine filtering in from the windows of their bedroom they'd occupied for so long now. "morning to you, too." he lowered his face to hers and pressed his lips against her forehead. mornings like this made ivan sure of the future ahead of him. they made him positive that all the late night fights and stressful wedding plans would be worth it in the long run.
ivan's index finger rubbed the sleep away from his eyes as the two lay side by side in silence. this happened to be a typical lazy day for them. when there was no class or job to rush to before the clock hit nine a.m. the bed was occupied by the two until one of their tummies rumbled and that cued one of them to muster all the strength in them to get up to start the coffee part and turn on the tv to whatever station had something at least half decent on. today ivan's tummy started the routine up. "oh c'mon! that's no fair." cassie cried and immediately buried herself under the covers. a childish laughter escaped ivan's lips as he fell back onto the mattress and patted his belly with the palm of his hand. "looks like someone needs to get up and make breakfast." his pale blue eyes looked over to the lump under the comforter to see if that sparked any movement. cassie remained in her spot as still as a statue. another rumble echoed through out the room and ivan's gaze shifted back to his stomach. "you're going to make me get up and do it, huh?" of course she would. after the time they spent up last night ivan could see why. and no, you perv, it's not for reasons you would think off. "uh huh." cassie's muffled voice responded while nodding her head beneath the sheets. "you are so lucky that i'm a nice boyfriend and don't let you starve," ivan said while bracing himself and finally getting enough power to get to his feet. the thud his feet made against the wood floor of the bedroom made cassie's head poke out. "i love you!" she cooed in a voice coated with layers of sugar. all ivan could do was shake his head back and forth while suppressing his laughter. "you better!"
ivan's fingers wrapped around the handle of the coffee pot before he held it under the faucet running with cold water. he could hear the pitter patter of cassie's tiny feet from the bedroom before the click of the master bathroom door bounced off the walls of the apartment. the boy's free hand reached for the remote control laying on the island counter and pressed the power button. channel six news at ten popped up on the television screen and the sound of the female anchor's voice reporting the morning traffic broke the silence in the room. ivan shrugged his shoulders and threw the remote back on the counter, turned off the sink, and spun on his heel with a coffee cup full of water ready to be brewed. it wasn't until the boy set up the coffee pot and got out all the ingredients to make french toast that he saw a red blinking one on the answering machine. ivan's eyebrows threaded together. even though they had a house phone, no one ever called it. ivan couldn't remember if anyone he knew even had his house number. his feet walked him toward the end table beside the couch and then his finger pressed the play button on the out dated answering machine. the voice ivan heard from the speakers instantly made him catch his breath.
"hey ivan! it's sophie from like, a million ages ago. uhm... i don't even know if this is the right number, but i'm back in town and i was wondering if you wanted to meet up or something. maybe i'll stop by or... you can call back and we'll set up a date. i mean, not like a 'date date', but y'know... a friend date? uhm, it's sophie. call me. bye."
this wasn't the sophie he thought it was, right? ivan's finger hit the play button again and listened to the same message repeat itself. it sounded like the sophie he remembered. from her soft voice to the edge on every word she spoke. of course it was her. ivan couldn't fool himself about this. no matter how hard he had tried to forget, after all this time, you just couldn't erase sophie pearson out of your life. she wasn't like a word document saved onto your computer. this was one girl that stayed with you like a permanent marker's writing on a piece of paper. it stayed there no matter what you did to it. ivan could try to wash all the memories away with school, his internship at the hospital, and cassie... but there would always be some part of that adorable blonde ivan would carry with him.
ivan turned away from the machine and began pacing the space of the living room. so, she wanted to meet up. well, why not? the two hadn't seen each other in a good two years. there was sure a lot to catch up on. the last time ivan came in contact with the girl was new years two thousand nine and that was via text message. he could finally tell her about cassie and their engagement. and about school and the intern position he got during the summer. then he could listen to all the glamorous stories she would tell him about while living in their posh estate in london. of course melaine and edward pearson would expect nothing less then a five bedroom mansion complete with a full tennis court and indoor spa. ivan remembered the nights sophie would tell him about how scary that big house was to her. god, there were a lot of nights ivan recalled of sophie describing her fears to him before they ate ice cream and watched old cheesy horror movies until she fell asleep on his should. how stupid he had been back then for passing up the chance to be with her... what was he talking about? that was then and this was now. cassie was now. cassie ----, his fiancé. his rock. the love of his life.
"one more time." ivan muttered to himself and quickly walked back to the telephone, pressing the play button for the last time. sophie's voice talked and ivan's ears listened... until reality pulled him back into his arms. "who's that?" ivan instantly hit the erase button. "message erased." the electronic voice declared loudly through the speaker and ivan wheeled around to look at cassie still all snug in her PINK pajamas. "just some telemarketer trying to pull us into some bull scam," ivan casually lied as he made his way to the girl leaning against the door way. once he stood in front of her, he wrapped his arms around he little waist and pulled her closer for a soft kiss before staring into her deep eyes. "i'm going to get rid of this morning breath and then make us breakfast. coffee is almost ready." ivan planted one more kiss on cassie's lips and fled to the bathroom, locking himself inside with his thoughts while brushing the plaque from his teeth.

“tristin! what the fuck did you do with my laundry!?"
the five foot eight blonde screamed from her bedroom before walking down the hall and into the spacious living room. sure enough tristin and his equally potheaded friend were passed out on the couch, eddie's head resting on tristin's shoulder. sophie tried not to burst out laughing as she picked up her phone from the coffee table and snapped a picture of the pair. "i think facebook needs to know about this." she muttered to herself, sending the picture over the iphone app, before skipping into the kitchen. on a normal day, hiding laundry wouldn't have been such a large hassle, but today she wasn't in the mood.
with a determined expression on her face, she marched back into the living room with a jug full of water from the fridge and poured it all over tristin. "where the hell is my laundry jackass?" sophie asked in a pissed off tone as tristin swore loudly at his sister. seeing that he wasn't going to tell her, she picked up the half empty bottle of vodka on the coffee table and walked off. "soph wait," tristin called in an exasperated tone of voice, making her stop and turn around with a sly expression across her face, "it's in my closet. can we have the vodka back." gross. that closet smelt like pot, weed and beer. her poor clothes. "sure." sophie told him bitterly before dropping the vodka onto the floor where it smashed loudly. a small smile formed on her lips as the two boys mourned the lost vodka and she honestly wouldn't be surprised if they went as far as licking it off the ground.
after spraying her perfume all over the clothes in an attempt to get the disgusting smell out, sophie smelt the clothes. well there was no way she'd be wearing those to ivan's, he'd think she turned into some crack addicted alcoholic which would be one of the worst possible things she could imagine because of his mother. no. she would be sophie pearson, badass. after pulling something respectable from her closet and leaving the sexy underwear in her drawer, she looked at herself in the mirror. so falling over in front of ivan and revealing the thong, which always resulted in eddie having eye sex with her, wouldn't be a good start.
once make up was applied, hair curled, flower pinned in hair and prada packed; she was ready to go. sophie wouldn't be this nervous if she was going to meet the queen of england. "you're doing this. it's just ivan. just keep your eyes off his ass and try not to have eddie style eye sex with him." the twenty-one year old told herself as she slid on those orange heels of hers. the sight was rather pathetic and morbid as sophie walked from her bedroom and made her way back to the living room. tristin was looking sadly towards the vodka on the floor, with a joint hanging from his mouth. "you are a fucking bitch sophie pearson." he told her bitterly. a giggle escaped her red lipstick covered lips as she pulled on the tan burberry trench coat. it was so typical of the both of them to be moping about a lost bottle of vodka which was going to waste on the floor. just as long as chester didn't lick it up, sophie didn't care. "goodbye assholes!" the blonde called as she closed the condo door behind her.
taking a deep breath, sophie climbed into the black vintage mustang and pulled the door shut. maybe if she was lucky she would take a wrong turn and never get to ivan's. just waiting for a call would have probably been safer and she wouldn't catch herself staring off at ivan, but there was no way sophie pearson was waiting around for a phone call. she wasn't that little naive and vulnerable virgin anymore. she was the twenty-one year old londoner who wouldn't waste anymore of her life silently hoping that ivan would call her. letting her left foot rise from the clutch and right foot press down on the accelorator, the mustang started down the slightly wet seattle street.
unfortunately the time sped by as sophie worried about all the possible situations which could happen. there were so many possibilities. the one which scared her most was if ivan hated her, that was something she couldn't handle. if that happened, tristin and eddie would be pleased to know that she would now be joining them on their late night escapades from club to club in an attempt to escape all their worries. sophie checked the address and gps on her iphone several times before opening the car door then stepping out. her blonde hair blew slightly around her face and she clutched her trench coat tighter around her body. seattle was just to flipping cold, why couldn't tristin have chosen to move to california? as slowly as she could, sophie walked across the apartment complex, her green eyes checking the numbers nailed to the doors as she did so. finally she came to a stop in front of one particular door. her breath shook slightly as she raised her clench fist and knocked on the door.

ivan quickly shoved his legs into the old pair of jeans he grabbed from the dirty laundry basket in the bathroom while clutching the bristles of his toothbrush between his teeth. for the last ten minutes ivan had replayed sophie's message in his head. how did she even get his number? why didn't she call him on his cell? maybe she lost it. maybe that was why they hadn't spoke in so long. "please. when you're sophie pearson you don't waste your time on boys from the poorer side of seattle with alcoholic mothers." it seemed like a good enough reason to not speak to someone. sophie had met allison before. she could scare cruella de vil easily. freddy and jason combined had nothing on allison joyce. the boy rushed back to the bathroom sink and spit out the toothpaste in his mouth, instantly turning the cold water on to rinse it down the drain. after rinsing out his mouth and toothbrush, ivan looked up at his reflection in the mirror. he'd changed since high school. the boy stood past six foot now and his then long, wispy hair was now a little shorter and usually had gel in it. he definitely had bulked up since then as well. those hours spent at the campus gym had eventually paid off. he wondered how much she had changed. would she have the same dazzling smile and bright eyes? would her laugh still be as contagious before or did all of it's purity die out? he would just have to call her and set up a place to meet up. there was no harm in seeing an old friend. certainly cassie would understand that. "baby, i made your cup of coffee just the way you like it." cassie's voice called from the kitchen and ivan's hand reached for the bathroom door, pulling it open in one swift move before retracing his steps back into the other room.
a bowl and two pans now sat atop the island counter along with everything else ivan needed to make breakfast when he got back to the kitchen. "are you going to help me make breakfast for once?" ivan teased as he reached for his coffee mug sitting on the counter with steam rising from it. "yes. i'm going to be your little helper for the day," cassie answer and jumped off her stool to rush to ivan's side. "i figured since we don't have anything going on today that we should go and do something. maybe go register a few more things at a couple of stores or go wine tasting." more wedding suggestions. ivan tried not to heave a sigh. he knew how important it was for cassie to have the dream wedding, but he didn't know that her idea of perfect was actually going to be... perfect. of course he wanted to get married, but did it really have to be all extraordinary and blinged out? "babe, we'll get around to that stuff. the wedding isn't for another four or five months..." ivan tried to sound reasonable, but cassie cut him off. "it's four months and three weeks away, ivan. that's sooner then you think. if we don't get this stuff done now then when are we? a week before? because that's not oka..." now it was his turn to stop her before she went any further. "cas, look at me," ivan spoke in the softest voice he could possibly find. "i promise you that things will get done. just not today, kay?" cassie's eyes fell down to the floor before looking back up at ivan and finally nodding her head. "plus," ivan hooked a finger to the waistband of her pajamas and pulled her closer to him. "i was brewing up some plans of my own."
cassie bit down on her bottom lip at ivan's suggestion. she was never one to object to his brilliant ideas. "oh really?" the girl placed both hands against his chest, feeling the muscles he spent the last few months on beneath the. ivan's lips collided with hers and before cassie knew it she was on top of the island counter with ivan's hair gripped in her hand while his teeth nipped at the nape of her neck. he definitely knew how to drive her crazy. ivan took one more bite at her neck before slowly pulling away and throwing one of the most seductive looks she'd ever seen at her. "but i need to make us breakfast right now. so, are you going to help me or not?" and with that being said he grabbed the bowl from behind her along with the eggs. "you are so evil, ivan joyce." cassie groaned and jumped down from the counter, exhaling a sigh from her mouth while doing so. "you can start the bacon." ivan smiled at her and went away with cracking the eggs.
a knock came from the front door minutes later and the couple's head snapped up from their task at the noise. "would you mind getting that, babe?" ivan politely asked while he dipped another slice of cinnamon bread into the egg mixture and placed it in the hot pan over the stove. "yeah. i'll be right back." cassie put down the tongs she had been using to move around the bacon and wiped her hand on a dish towel quickly before walking to the front door. who could that possibly be? another knock came and cassie quickened her pace. "coming!" she called out while running her fingers through her dark hair.
the girl turned the lock to the left and opened the door within two seconds to see another girl, about a few inches taller then her with blonde hair, in front of her. "hi.. can i help you with anything?" cassie asked sweetly and ran her eyes up and down this stranger. what was this chick trying to go for? classy prostitue?

“hi.. can i help you with anything?"
for a brief second, sophie thought that she may have knocked on the wrong door. standing there was a shorter girl with ratty brown hair and tanned skin, who was wearing a singlet which clung to her body and short shorts...well to be honest she may as well not have been wearing them. willing to recognize her own mistake and just call ivan again to ask where exactly his apartment was, sophie started to turn away but stopped. oh no, that bitch did not just give her the "tanya" look. tanya davidson was a girl from her old school who would give everyone she clearly didn't like this sickly sweet look which basically said "i'm better than you, don't fuck with me".
okay, she could play this game. instead of giving her the famous person death stare, the blonde let a sugar sweet smile form on her lips. "you can actually!" sophie replied happily, taking a step forward before digging through her prada in search of her iphone. after unlocking the phone, she searched through the address book until "ivan joyce" appeared. unfortunately, she had lost his mobile number when she had "lost" her old phone. well it had dropped out of her jacket pocket actually and fell into the thames river. leaning over the bridge when you've had a little bit too much vodka wasn't a good idea, sophie had been heartbroken when she pictured the blackberry being swamped by fish. there was always facebook but seriously, what was on that page wasn't the first impression she wanted to give ivan after all these years. "this is the number for this apartment right?" the tall blonde asked, holding the iphone up to the hoebag's face so she could see the number. once a slight nod came from the girl, sophie smiled widely, over exaggerating it slightly. "great! i'm sophie pearson, i'm here to see ivan."
strangely, at the mention of ivan's name, the girl blocked the gap in the doorway with her arm. oh, so this bitch didn't want to let her in? raising her perfectly shaped eyebrow, sophie simply ducked under the girl's arm and walked into the apartment. the home was warm, humble and it was completely obvious that ivan of all people lived there. she had learned after many nights of deep conversations, that he didn't want to live in a melanie pearson approved home. industrial and modern. instead, ivan wanted something that would actually feel like a home and not just a building with furniture in it, sophie had agreed with him enthusiastically many times.
feeling that this girl was the type who dreamed of living in a penthouse surrounded by designer brands, sophie made not effort to hide the thousand dollar labels from the bitch. oh melanie pearson would be proud of her daughter's bitchiness. who knew, maybe sophie could force out a genuine smile towards the brunette but it wasn't her fault that she'd given her the "tanya" smile. seeing as there was a coat rack just by the front door, sophie took off her burberry and hung it up. "wow, this is a really nice place. thank you so much for inviting me in!" to be quite honest, she had changed a lot over the years. appearance wise, she wasn't frail and sickly and had finally regained a full head of golden blonde curls. personality wise, well that had changed. of course she was still the optimistic, stubborn and cheerful pain in the ass but things change you. events that weren't supposed to happen. her ex-boyfriend and now best friend had in a way, taught her that if she was always going to be lovely to people all the time, she'd be the pushover forever. and after developing a backbone, sophie had discovered she liked things better that way. yet amazingly, after all that had happened, she still managed to have that bright smile which lit up the room and twinkle in her green eyes.
it was a definite that this girl wanted to kill sophie in the most painful way possible. who was she anyway? her heels tapped softly on the floor as she stepped further into the apartment. and that was when she nearly died of shock. a young man was standing in the kitchen, shirtless with his sweats hanging low at the hips. there was no mistaking that that was ivan joyce's ass. and dear god almighty, even though she could just see his back, those muscles were just...well clearly the last four years had done the pair of them some good and they no longer looked like awkward and completely messed up teenagers. "ivan!" sophie squealed excitedly after regaining her composure. she dropped her handbag onto the floor and hurried into the kitchen, throwing her arms around ivan and hugging him tight.

"ivan!"
the carton of eggs in the boy's hands fell to the floor at the sound of that voice. this was definitely not what he had expected to happen today. ivan's blue eyes flew from the mess on the tile to his left where, believe it or not, miss sophie pearson stood in one of the most flattering (and sexiest) outfits he had ever seen her dolled up in. if he said that sophie hadn't changed in the last four years, ivan would be considered a liar. it took everything the boy had to not let his jaw fall to the floor. yeah, a beautiful sophie pearson standing before him after four years with a pearly white smile on her face and long blonde hair falling over her should wasn't exactly the thing ivan thought he would be seeing today or any other day for that matter.
"sophie," her name came out of his mouth in a whisper and a second later she came running toward him. ivan braced himself as the familiar blonde rushed at him and finally flung herself into his open embrace. the boy's arms mechanically wrapped around sophie's torso and his nose buried into her neck. the two were at the same height now with those gigantic heels strapped on her feet. they stood like that briefly before ivan pulled himself away to stare at his old friend. "what are you doing here? i didn't... i wasn't... planning on you actually... wow." the words tumbled out of his mouth before his brain could form perfect sentences. he sounded like an idiot as he always had when sophie came around. some things will never change. this was all so surreal.
"i take it that you two know each other?" cassie's voice finally piped up from behind. ivan peered over sophie's shoulder to look at his girlfriend who wore the best fake smile she could flash their way. "yeah! uhm, cassie," ivan moved around sophie and walked to cassie's side, wrapping one arm around her waist to assure her that sophie was no real threat. the look in his fiancé's eyes told ivan that things were going to get a little... territorial within the next three seconds. cassie instinctively leaned her head against ivan's shoulder, patiently waiting for ivan to begin introductions. "that is sophie pearson. we used to be friends back in high school," he started off and gestured to the petite blonde standing in his spot. the boy looked back at sophie and locked onto her sparkling green eyes. he thanked god that they hadn't lost their shine over the years. "sophie, this is cassie burns. she's my..." ivan's hand was about to motion to cassie before she broke free of his hold and inched her way toward sophie. "fiancé. it's a pleasure to meet you. any friend of ivan's is surely a friend of mine." the tone of voice she used instantly sent off alarms in ivan's head. this could possibly get ugly.
"cass," ivan frantically searchd for a task that needed to be done. the egg whites spilt all over the kitchen tile instantly drew attention to the boy's light eyes. saved by the eggs. "will you clean up those eggs please? sophie scared me with her enthusastic greeting." his feet carried him over to the two girls and his hand reached for the dish towel on the counter, quickly placing it in cassie's hands. "of course, baby." cassie's candy coated voice cooed and she moved around sophie to clean the mess on the floor. "soph, let me show you around the place. you'll actually get to see something clean in an apartment i live in for once." ivan extended his hand to sophie's and pulled her away from cassie before she 'accidently' decided to trip her. sophie would owe him for doing such a favor.
ivan politely escorted sophie around the apartment 'til the two stood in the bedroom with clothes scattered about the floor and the bed sheets all jumbled together since someone decided not to make it. "sorry," ivan apologized and instantly ran around the room, picking up the dirty laundry and trying to straighten out the bed as best as he could without taking a decade to do so. "cassie isn't exactly the neatest person to live with. i won't even show you what her side of the sink looks like in the bathroom." he joked and nervously scratched the back of his head, placing his other hand on his hip. silence filled the air while sophie examined the room. this wasn't awkward at all. there were so many things ivan wanted to talk about, but who knows what would be okay with cassie in the next room over most likely listening to whatever they said. "i really didn't expect you to actually show up at my door step. when you said you were in town i thought visiting. do you have a place out here now?" he would start with the small talk. that was just the way to go right now. the other stuff they would hit later on... eventually.

the sound of eggs crashing to the ground was an ultimatum of sorts that she'd succeeded in surprising ivan joyce. that very second he wrapped his arms around her and drew her close could have about killed her. it occurred to her that she was a stupid idiot for not keeping in touch with him and staying friends because perhaps then, the stupid brunette wouldn't be standing in the room.
"what are you doing here? i didn't... i wasn't... planning on you actually... wow." it was the same old ivan with his awkward stuttering and not being able to form a full sentence half the time. she had to admit that she was impressed with the stare she'd earned from him which proved that she must have done something right. sophie giggled lightly and wrapped her arms around ivan once again, kissing him gently on the cheek. "i missed you," she whispered softly in his ear before rolling her eyes at the unwanted voice which was heard behind them. "i take it that you two know each other?" obviously idiot, i don't just walk into apartments and hug people, sophie thought to herself. immediately, she felt like the third wheel when ivan left her side to stand next to "cassie". the blonde couldn't help but let her eyes drift to the arm in which ivan had wrapped around the other girl's waist. awkward and out of place wasn't how sophie pearson was meant to feel when she was in the same room as ivan joyce.
not really knowing what relationship ivan and cassie had, sophie forced a smile for her old friend, despite the fact she wanted to rip out the brunette's throat. "that is sophie pearson. we used to be friends back in high school," he told the clearly jealous girl, gesturing towards sophie in a way she hated. the twenty-one year old had no idea why she hated the simple hand gesture, but it was most likely because when ivan did it he had his arm wrapped around the waist of another girl. "sophie, this is cassie burns. she's my..." poor ivan, he was trying to keep things calm and neutral. it would take an idiot not to feel the tension present in the room. "fiancée. it's a pleasure to meet you. any friend of ivan's is surely a friend of mine."
silently thanking god that that sophie hadn't been standing there, sophie gave a small smile in reply to ivan's...finacée. that seventeen year old sophie would have run from the apartment and spent the rest of her life wallowing with ice cream and sad romance movies. like fuck they were going to be friends and sophie knew for sure that cassie was also aware of that fact. it was obvious due to the slightly territorial tone of voice which the dark haired girl used. cassie also made an effort to subtly make sure that the engagement ring sitting on her finger would be able to be seen by sophie. "cass," ivan's voice interrupted the tense silence and both girls seemed to focus their attention away from wanting to kill each other. alright so maybe that was a little overexagerated. all sophie wanted to do was make sure the skank never went near ivan again, it was a simple enough request. "will you clean up those eggs please? sophie scared me with her enthusastic greeting." good job ivan, leave the wench to clear everything up.
noticing the eggs which had pooled together not far away from her orange heels, sophie sidestepped away from them with a smirk present on her lips. "smooth ivan. i figured you'd be used to me scaring you by now," her voice rose over cassie's, who was now working on cleaning up the mess on the kitchen floor. being close to death many times in their friendship, the amount of times sophie had pretty much scared ivan to death was an achievement. "soph, let me show you around the place. you'll actually get to see something clean in an apartment i live in for once." the blonde took ivan's hand happily and rose an eyebrow when he pulled her to the side slightly. looking over her shoulder she saw cassie drawing her leg back in with a disappointed expression on her face. skank.
the apartment was lovely, sophie could live here happily herself. of course the condo was large and spacious, but she would find herself more comfortable in a simple apartment somewhere that didn't have a doorman. the pair made polite small talk as they walked around the apartment, both aware cassie could most likely hear them from the kitchen. "sorry," ivan immediately apologized, running around picking up clothes as sophie entered the bedroom. "cassie isn't exactly the neatest person to live with. i won't even show you what her side of the sink looks like in the bathroom." the blonde gave a short laugh, mentally cursing herself for letting the bitterness seep through. she ignored his nervous stature as she walked around the bedroom, her green eyes gazing around. there was no way she was sitting on that bed; you cannot tell me that someone like cassie hadn't already gotten into ivan's pants. over the past few years sophie had learned to restrain herself from tears. she'd been working on it ever since noah had left her after she told him about that memorable situation she'd rather not remember.
"i really didn't expect you to actually show up at my door step. when you said you were in town i thought visiting. do you have a place out here now?" small talk, good choice ivan. "um yeah. tristin decided that he was moving to seattle and i sort of had to come with him. i dragged noah along too, so at least there's someone to talk to when tristin is completely out of it i guess..." sophie responded quietly with half a smile, fiddling absentmindedly with the hem of her dress, "we have a condo on the other side of town. it's kind of crazy, you're welcome to come over. we have more than enough ice cream." she had emphasised the "you're" because there was no way cassie was coming into her home and contaminating the place with bitch.
"i'm really happy that you found someone ivan," sophie lied politely looking up at ivan yet was planning to let that sourness lace through her next few words, "cassie seems...lovely"

what if things had turned out completely different? that was one question that came to ivan joyce's head one too many times over the last four years. and he couldn't help from it returning once again as the two stood across the room from each other, stealing quick glances at each other before looking back down at the floor or some piece of art hung on the walls. this could have been them. it felt like such a horrible thing to say, but it was one hundred percent true. maybe if ivan had just taken a chance and finally confessed all those feelings he'd been holding back for so many years, it woud be sophie falling asleep in the king size bed instead of cassie. instead of spending days out at the forum shops or eating lunch in fancy bistros, ivan could be stuck inside the comfort of his own home eating at his own pint of ice cream while his eye remained glued to the horror movie playing on the television. and there with him would be sophie with her head on his shoulder while she finished off her third serving of ben and jerry's with chester nuzzled in her lap. everyone had their regrets, right?
"um yeah. tristin decided that he was moving to seattle and i sort of had to come with him. i dragged noah along too," hold the phone. noah? since when was there ever a noah in the picture? ivan tried to hide the pang of envy that hit him, knowing that there was another guy sophie enjoyed spending a lot of her time with when that used to be him. "so at least there's someone to talk to when tristin is completely out of it i guess... we have a condo on the other side of town. it's kind of crazy, you're welcome to come over. we have more than enough ice cream." a crooked smile played across ivan's lips at the way sophie made sure the "you're" in her sentence was meant strictly for him to not assume he could bring someone along. that someone being cassie, of course. was someone just a little bit jealous? "oh, well, i'm glad you're back out here, soph." ivan admitted and sat on the edge of the bed set right in the middle of the wall opposite of the room's door. "honestly, i thought you might have forgotten about poor ol' me," he joked before patting the spot next to him. there was no point in trying to keep their distance. one way or another they would be pinching or biting each other just like old times. you just couldn't stop the inevitable.
"i'm really happy that you found someone ivan," bullshit. ivan knew better then to fall for that tone of hers. when it was sweeter then white chocolate the girl was definitely lying. maybe she was trying to send that impression though. deep down inside, even though ivan refused to admit it, part of them wanted the situation completely changed. then they wouldn't have to side step around all the crap between them. ivan wouldn't have to act like he didn't want to run up to sophie and see exactly what she had underneath that gorgeous sundress of hers wrap his arms around her and feel the same friendship they shared years ago. because that' all they were and all they would ever be. just friends. "cassie seems...lovely." the mention of cassie's name got his head back in the right mind set. cassie was the future mrs. ivan joyce. he just had to keep telling himself that. "you haven't had the chance to really talk to her. she's a really great girl," ivan spoke the truth. somewhat. cassie had her moments that was for sure. "she just knows how close we used to be. i remember the first couple of dates we had i kept telling her all these stories that, surprisingly, included you. that shows you how i had no friends in high school." hey, it wasn't his fault that he was the only kid that didn't like to go out and get smashed every night of the week. "i think if you two really at least tried to talk, you would get along with each other." the look of disbelief on sophie's face sent ivan into fit of giggles. like that was ever going to happen. "i was only making an innocent suggestion. it wouldn't hurt to try since we are getting married in four months." and a long four months it was going to be with all the plans cassie had in store for them. it was time to start mentally preparing himself now.

okay so tristin and noah were both right when they told her that she'd only be hurting herself in looking for ivan. of course tristin had been a lot more harsh and told her she was a stupid thong wearing bitch, thank god for noah taylor and his bear hugs which practically crushed her. if sophie had just let herself completely about ivan joyce then she wouldn't be standing in the bedroom where he and his skanky girlfriend jumped each other several times a week. oh wait, fiancée. bitterness towards others was something she tried to avoid in life, but this situation kind of exceeded what she had expected when laying out that "rule" of sorts.
"oh, well, i'm glad you're back out here, soph." ivan told her sincerely, sitting on the edge of the bed, "honestly, i thought you might have forgotten about poor ol' me." and then he patted the side of the bed, there were two ways she could look at this. it meant that he wasn't going to make this awkward by keeping his distance from her. but it also meant that she was going to have to sit on that goddamn bed and then disinfect her ass when she got home, not to mention burning her dress. which was a shame because she really liked it. rejecting his invitation would most likely make him feel awkward and rotten, which was something sophie didn't want at all. "you're ridiculous, i couldn't forget about you even if i wanted to," sophie laughed as she sat as close to ivan as possible on the bed, "the only reason you haven't gotten texts from me for about two years is because my blackberry fell into the thames one night when noah, tristin and i were a bit...out of things." she tilted her head to the side, yeah that was the only way she could describe it without saying "wow, we were totally piss drunk that night and i had amazing unprotected sex with noah." what a legit white lie sophie pearson.
the longer she sat in the bedroom with so many reminders that cassie also lived here, the idea that ivan was really going to marry this girl became more fixed into her mind. she was going to have to be a big girl and suck it up. accept that she was always going to be the best friend and never the girlfriend. "you haven't had the chance to really talk to her. she's a really great girl," ivan told sophie, words she had a hard time believing, "she just knows how close we used to be. i remember the first couple of dates we had i kept telling her all these stories that, surprisingly, included you. that shows you how i had no friends in high school." at that sophie giggled and shook her head, resting her head on ivan's shoulder. "no wonder she hates me. you aren't supposed to tell her about your most amazing, wonderful and smart friend on those first few dates."
she couldn't help but be filled with guilt when ivan had told her she was basically his only friend in high school. unfortunately melanie pearson hadn't cared when sophie begged her to let her stay in seattle, go to boarding school or something. boys who were having a rough time and also had alcoholic mothers didn't have a place in mrs. pearson's heart or mind. stupid selfish bitch. "i think if you two really at least tried to talk, you would get along with each other." really, had ivan's mental state deteriorated within the past four years. the blonde stared at him in disbelief, the look in her green eyes honestly questioning his sanity. "i was only making an innocent suggestion. it wouldn't hurt to try since we are getting married in four months." four months? being subtle was out of the question, sophie's eyes widened as she stared at the floor before her. "wow...four months is really soon," she said quietly, honestly thinking that she would have longer to prepare herself mentally for seeing ivan confess his love to cassie freaking burns. c'mon sophie, pull it together and bring out the optimist. "well i sincerely hope that you're inviting me and i get to be involved, even if that means i get to go tux shopping with you," she exclaimed, jumping off the bed and turning to face ivan with a bright smile across her lips.
they needed to talk, somewhere where cassie wasn't listening in the other room. and ivan needed to cover his abs and pull up those pants before sophie jumped his bones. "okay. we're going out. i get you for the rest of the day, no questions asked and i'm paying for everything," sophie told him, clapping her hands together in an orderly fashion. determined to get out of this apartment, she walked over to the window and opened the blinds, letting light stream into the room and then started picking up things ivan had missed. her green eyes spotted a shirt of some sorts directly in front of ivan. jackpot. her heels tapped lightly as she walked over and bent down picking the clothing item from the floor and chucking it on the bed. a bit of ass never hurt anyone. "okay. you get ready. i'm going to get and let cassie know about our arrangement. and i'll be nice, i promise."
feeling pleased with her sudden hit of spontaneity, sophie closed the bedroom door behind her and made her way to the kitchen. "cassie!" she called happily, smiling slightly as she brunette started fumbling and making it seem like she was busy reading a magazine. "ivan told me that he believes we could get along with each other if we tried," sophie told the girl, sitting on a bar stool whilst giving the sweetest smile she could manage, "so we're going make him think we are trying, understood? i think that entitles me becoming a bridesmaid, because...well he is one of my best friends and i want him to be happy." she was playing nice, in the bitchiest way possible, but you couldn't say that sophie pearson wasn't being sweet with that cheerful smile playing on her lips and sweet tone of voice clearly lacing her british accent. the blonde slid off the bar stool upon seeing the wet dishes simply waiting to be dried at the sink. because she had a feeling if cassie got a hold of that saucepan, sophie would get hit over the head with it. lovely. thinking she should probably notify the girl of the plans for today, sophie quickly dried the dishes and turned towards cassie. "i'm stealing ivan for the day; but i'll have him home before twelve, don't you worry." if sophie was going to spend the day with ivan, she literally meant the entire day.

the first couple of months of ivan and cassie's relationship were pretty rocky. the two came from two different worlds. ivan came from one that required you to wipe puke from the kitchen floor, carry someone to bed every night, and care for yourself along with keep your grades in good shape to even graduate. allison joyce didn't exactly make ivan's teenage years a walk in the park. in fact, it was far from that. but not once had he complained and left his mother to drown in her own vomit. he learned to be patient and gentle toward others, which sparked his interest in becoming a doctor. not only just his mother, but sophie as well (that's totally not the reason why he's an intern for an oncologist at all. note my sarcasm, people.) and why not? ivan knew the hospital like the back of his hand anyway from all of the time he spent in there. when cassie waltzed into his life she was a beauty queen who sat in the second room of the classroom with her seventeen inch screen in front of her and typed up a ridiculous amount of words per minute. everyday she would walk in with a new purse or a new color coated over her nails. ivan wondered if she ever wore anything in her wardrobe twice. yet out of all the boys in their anatomy class, she walked over to him with a dazzling smile on her face, and asked for his help for their upcoming exam. their first time hanging out had not ran smoothly at all. a simple study session ended up turning into a complete disaster when ivan spilt black coffee down her brand new white blouse. yeah, cassie was one of the materialistic ones, but she had surprised him the next day when she apologized for throwing a hissy fit and attempted to be... middle class for a day. that cassie burns was just full of surprises. obviously she did something right to snag ivan away from the clutches sophie pearson had over him over seas.
however, there had been a time where she was so close to losing him... and not because of her own flaws. everyone who attended northern seattle high school knew about sophie and ivan's "situation". they were the best friends who never had the courage to just confess their love for each other and spent years acting like it was okay that they would be nothing more then a shoulder to cry on. and it wasn't until sophie flew across the atlantic ocean that the thought dawned on pathetic ivan joyce. if he didn't do something drastic to save the potential romantic relationship he'd always dreamed of soon, then sophie would be gone forever. she would find someone else in england who would sweep her off her tiny feet before riding off bareback into the sunset. so, he picked up his ghetto verizon wireless phone and quickly dialed in the only number he knew by heart without thinking twice. one minute the two were talking about how their day had gone and the next, ivan was bracing himself to finally say it. say that one phrase that contained three words with eight letters. "i love you." he could have died after the words flew out. he might as well have hung up then, save himself from the rejection he could feel coming as silence came between the two. and just as his thumb was about to press the end button, sophie's whisper echoed in ivan's ear. "i love you, too." and cue the angels singing from above.
at the time, cassie and ivan had been dating for a couple of months. neither of them took it all that seriously. they were just having fun. that's what you did when you were in college, right? so, what did ivan have to lose? nothing. which was why the very second after they exchanged good-byes, ivan booked a plane ticket to england for a week and a half later. the boy instantly started counting down the days. soon it was at two more days to go and ivan began making his rounds to his classes telling them of the short absence he would be taking, but he'd be back in time for the end of the year finals. a couple of days spending time with sophie after months away from each other was definitely worth missing work from six classes. finally the day came. all of his bags were packed and ivan had his plane ticket and passport in hand while he sat in the taxi on the way to the airport. after leaving a very brief message on cassie's cell phone to tell her he would be gone for a few days, the boy made his way through security and sat in one of the chairs by gate c4. it was now just a matter of hours and he waited as patiently as he possibly could for them to pass. and then the phone rang and ivan's world fell apart.
the sudden shift of weight ivan felt underneath him made his train of thought pull away from the most painful memory contained in his heart. and that was saying something when you had allison joyce for a mother. "okay. we're going out. i get you for the rest of the day, no questions asked and i'm paying for everything," one of sophie's priceless stretched across her face as she stared at ivan with her piercing green eyes. how could he object to that? the blonde started rushing around the room, picking up things that ivan had missed in his half fast attempt to straighten up the mess he called a bedroom. she was everywhere until she finally took the time to bend over (if ivan knew the new sophie, he would notice her attempt to show off some of her assests) and pick up a stray shirt she found suitable for their little outing. the shirt came flying toward the bed and ivan's finger tips barely clutched the collar of it. ivan had to admit, that sophie pearson did have good taste. "okay. you get ready. i'm going to get and let cassie know about our arrangement. and i'll be nice, i promise." the slightly mischievous voice sophie spoke in made ivan's eyebrow raise. "i'll be watching to see if you stick to that, soph." and with that being said he watched sophie's backside as she strutted out of the room, her heels clicking against the wooden floor. "god, give me strength."
the boy hurried around his bedroom with one leg in his jeans and the other hopping around the floor. who knew how hard it was to find something to go with a plain black v-neck. ivan listerally spent two minutes debating whether or not throwing on his leather jacket was being too risky or not. that was just your typical ivan joyce. the mop on the top of ivan's head had been neatly gelled back thanks to one of the hair products cassie had given him in his stocking for christmas and if he could ever get these pants on, he'd be all ready to go. the entire day out with sophie... this could get a little out of hand. who knows what damage those two could do within twenty-four hours. maybe they'd bring back old memories and go race in the shopping carts at the local grocery store. oh, good times... good times. ivan's foot finally slipped through the pant hole and the boys hands pulled the denim up his leg 'til the wait of his jeans sat loosely on his hips. after one final look at himself in cassie's vanity mirror, ivan finally got to the door and pulled it open to see sophie drying dishes while cassie watched her with eyes like a hawk.
"did you start making her do labor work, cass?" ivan playfully questioned while walking to sophie's side, reaching for the pot in sophie's hand and finishing up drying it. "no, she offered. you have such helpful friends, ivan." cassie's voice was as fake as pamela anderson's boobs. ivan was never going to hear the end of this. he noticed the way her brown eyes judged sophie while she stood there without faultering. "i was just thinking how lovely it would be if sophie were to be in the wedding. i know that it's last minute and everything, but i'm sure i can find room for her on the bridal party. you must want your best friend there to watch us vow our love to each other." cassie was now at ivan's side and her hands were wrapped around ivan's. ivan looked from cassie to sophie with suspicion. "uhm," was she being serious? "of course i want her there. that would mean the world to me, babe. if you're sure that it won't ruin anything you have planned with the dresses and everything." there was no point in not trying to play along with this little game. he could use this to his advantage later on tonight when cassie forced him to sleep on the couch. "it won't ruin anything. i'll be more then happy for sophie to join us on that special day." and this was where ivan broke the tension again by being mister neutral. "well, soph and i are going to head out for awhile, but i'll be home later on tonight. don't wait up for me." ivan bent his head down to give cassie a quick kiss on the lips before inching toward the front door with sophie only a few centimeters ahead. "alrighty. you two have fun. i love you, ivan." cassie called from behind, waving good-bye as ivan opened the front door. "i love you, too." and then the intense atmosphere suddenly disappeared.
the leather jacket had been a good decision on his part. "uhm," ivan's attention shifted to sophie as they walked down the pathway to the parking lot. "that was... unexpected. here i was worrying that you two would be on the floor pulling each others hair out. instead cassie wants you to be a bridesmaid? why do i smell something fishy going on? did you do some jedi mind trick on her?" they came to a hault when they reached his semi-new honda civic. "the least i can do is drive you around if you're paying for everything." ivan walked to the passenger door and politely opened it, waiting for sophie to settle herself inside. "madame," he spoke in the most formal voice in him. "you're carriage awaits."

it was strange how certain events which had occurred approximately two years ago, remained silent. almost like an unspoken pact between the pair and to be quite honest, sophie didn't want to explain why she'd ended everything so suddenly. of course at the time she had felt rotten and only wanted ivan by her side. her relationship with noah hadn't been final or serious, just a bit of fun. he was hot and willing so why not? unfortunately her logic seemed to go down the drain whenever noah taylor gave her "that look". spending the rest of her life with noah wasn't something sophie could live with. they'd probably piss each other off until no end, which is why they were better as friends. because sophie could call noah an arrogant bastard and he could call her an annoying little bitch, but five minutes later they would be laughing and acting like best friends again.
to be perfectly honest, ivan was probably the only person she would feel ashamed about telling him what happened. because he knew that innocent and naive little sophie pearson who wouldn't hurt a fly, not the one who got completely wasted and had unprotected sex with her boyfriend when there was so much to loose. although sophie wanted to think that ivan would simply brush it off and not an ounce of respect for her would be lost, she knew that it wasn't possible. not possible for someone to not have a changed perspective after hearing something like that.
"did you start making her do labor work, cass?" sophie turned slightly at the sound of ivan's voice, ah the leather jacket. good choice. she bumped his hip playfully as her stood at her side, taking the pot from her hands. "no, she offered. you have such helpful friends, ivan." cassie replied in a sweet voice which made sophie roll her eyes. but there was a positive, she didn't blurt out sophie's stern words to ivan. "i was just thinking how lovely it would be if sophie were to be in the wedding. i know that it's last minute and everything, but i'm sure i can find room for her on the bridal party. you must want your best friend there to watch us vow our love to each other." that bitch. ivan looked back and forth between the two girls at his side with an utterly confused look on his face. it took all the strength sophie could muster not to shoot cassie a pearson death stare and knock her over the head with that pot in ivan's hands. vow their love to each other? the rest of cassie and ivan's conversation didn't particularly register to the blonde as she focused on not having a gigantic tantrum in the middle of the kitchen.
as soon as they started getting soppy with the "i love you's", sophie rolled her eyes and walked from the kitchen, slinging her handbag over her shoulder and grabbing her coat. she gave cassie a slight wave before exiting the apartment with ivan right behind her. "that was... unexpected. here i was worrying that you two would be on the floor pulling each others hair out. instead cassie wants you to be a bridesmaid? why do i smell something fishy going on? did you do some jedi mind trick on her?" his true confusion was spoken and sophie merely shook her head with a giggle, not giving him any clues. "what can i say? i'm amazing."
eventually they came to a stop in front a car which was so incredibly ivan. "the least i can do is drive you around if you're paying for everything." of course he was going to find himself something to do. the way she saw it, she had an unlimited amount of money to spend so why not use it? “fine. but we have to come back for my car,” sophie told him sternly, pointing to the black mustang sitting a few metres away. although tristin didn’t really give a crap about a lot of things, he believed that car was too valuable and badass to get ruined by some smartass teenagers. "madame," ivan said in a voice which reminded sophie of the doorman at their apartment building, as he opened the car door for her, "your carriage awaits." the blonde smiled at her best friend, the silliness reminding her of four years ago when they had both been so young and vulnerable. “why thank you kind sir,” she told him, climbing into the car and mentally preparing herself for when ivan was finally in the car with the door shut behind him.
it was obvious that they needed to talk and ivan didn’t seem to be planning on starting this dreaded conversation, so sophie knew she’d have to do it herself. her nervous level rose when ivan started the car and put it into drive. she bit her lip, knowing that she’d had to tell him where they were going and that silence was becoming uncomfortable and awkward. those two words should never be in a sentence involving sophie pearson and ivan joyce. “umm, i thought we could go back to my place to talk about…stuff. tristin and eddie should be gone by now,” her green eyes stayed focused on the iphone screen as she put the information into the gps for ivan’s sake, “just follow this here, i suck at directions,”
thankfully the car ride seemed to go quickly, small talk was being exchanged between the two, nothing too serious being touched on. school was the main topic, their family and the past few years stayed out of the conversation. finally the elegant looking building holding stylish condo’s appeared before them and sophie directed ivan to the carpark where her mustang usually was parked. once they were out of the car, sophie pulled ivan along happily, greeting the doorman with a pleasant hello. she grew slightly more nervous as she unlocked the condo door, yet the nervousness developed into anger within a time slot of three seconds. “ugh that jackass! i liked those!” sophie yelled angrily, loosing it for a brief second. so dropping their precious vodka on the floor this morning and expecting them to clean it up wasn’t exactly a smart expectation. she left ivan’s side and started picking up her various pieces of underwear which were soaking wet with vodka. if she wasn’t so angry, she would have been embarrassed at the fact ivan was standing behind her.
leaving him in the foyer, sophie stomped into the kitchen and dropped the ruined underwear into the trashcan. while she was in the kitchen, she grabbed a carton of ben and jerry’s from the freezer and two spoons. “sorry about that,” sophie apologized to ivan, grasping a hold of his hand and pulling him down the hall to her bedroom, “tristin, is still a pain in the ass who never lets me win anything.” her bedroom was far from plain, unlike tristin who covered his walls with cigarette packets and pictures of half naked girls, sophie actually took pride in what her room looked like. it was neat and tidy, the walls covered in vintage movie posters and pieces of art, along with pictures of her friends from england. a guitar which she had gotten after noah taught her how to play was sitting in the corner and absolutely nothing was out of place.
chucking the ice cream on her bed, sophie took off her trench coat and chucked it into her walk in closet, the orange heels following soon afterwards. she looked ivan up and down before deciding that she could not completely relax wearing a short dress, because knowing her, she would sit awkwardly and flash. embarrassing. “hmm, i’m going to get changed. make yourself at home; i want to see you make a start on that ice cream,” after closing the door to her walk in, sophie undressed and redressed as quickly as possible. she plaited her hair messily before pulling on an old pair of knee high socks which had both her and ivan’s writing scrawled all over it and took out her contacts, replacing them with her glasses. with a bright smile on her face, sophie walked from the wardrobe and skipped over to ivan and sat cross legged next to him. “okay, so. hi. i’m sophie and i am the worst friend in the world,” she said after swallowing a mouthful of ice cream, “ask me…anything.” she had to get this over and done with because the sooner they talked, the sooner things would feel relatively normal for her.
