the story of mollie santana rutherford began nineteen years ago. however, her parents, chloe and joesph rutherford met before that. it was about twenty three years ago. chloe had been a waitress at a small but successful cafe in new york city while joesph was working at his father's big business company. they were complete opposites and it seemed impossible that they would ever meet but one day joesph really needed a coffee and his co-worker alison recommended the cute little 'Bleu Coffee House' so joesph followed her in and was surprised at how different this was to his usual idea of a nice cafe. this place was kind of dark and right now he was the only person inside wearing a suit. everyone else was dressed pretty casually, some people even looked a little bit like -gulp- hippies. this was pretty much everything that joesph wasn't. joesph was a very conservative man, even as a young boy in high school. it was al his father's influence of course. maxwell rutherford was very much a business man before a family man. he was always busy with his company and rarely home for dinner but when he was he was always criticizing joesph. joesph was the only son in his family so he was expected to follow in his father's footsteps and as he grew up, that's exactly what he did. he took on board all of the criticisms that his father gave him and whether he wanted to or not, he ended up quite a lot like his father. by the time he was twenty years old and walked into that small cafe, he was already on his way to taking over his father's company any day now.
chloe, on the hand, was the wild one of her family. she was one of three girls and the youngest so of course she had been the most spoilt and the most resented by her sisters. not that chloe ever noticed. she just floated along doing her own thing. chloe was always the slightly odd one who wasn't quite with everyone else but she was very popular in high school. when she dropped out half way through senior year though, everyone shook their heads and laughed to themselves about how she clearly wasn't going to get very far since she wasn't the smartest crayon in the box. still, she managed to get this good job at a nice cafe with a good wage and friendly customers. it was a pretty casual cafe with lots of yummy cakes and such and delicious coffee which is why joesph's friend alison knew to come here. but imagine chloe's surprise when a man in a suit walked in! the only man she'd ever seen here in a suit was the manager of the cafe and that had only been because he'd stopped by on the way to his friend's wedding. people didn't get dressed up to come here because it was too much of a risk in case you spilled your coffee on yourself or got cake crumbs on it etc. still, she tried not to give him too many strange looks as she went up and served him and alison. it actually turned out that she knew alison. alison was chloe's eldest sister's friend from college so she was pleased to see chloe out of school and in an actual job. she quickly introduced chloe and joesph and as chloe went off with their orders, alison noticed joesph's eyes following her all the way back to the register.
as soon as alison went home that night after work, she called up chloe's older sister penelope and asked for chloe's number to give to joesph. joesph wasn't just going to call up this girl that he didn't even know though, he wasn't that kind of guy. instead, joesph found himself dropping by the Bleu Coffee House more and more frequently over the next few weeks and months until finally he asked her out to a nice dinner. of course chloe said yes because hello, he was clearly rich and a gentleman and pretty hot too. after a few successful dates, it seemed that chloe and joesph clicked rather well, despite being practically opposites. he was conservative and fairly uptight, all about his work while she was wild, carefree and happy to do whatever came next. right now, that was joesph and do him she did.
about four months into their relationship, chloe noticed that she was late and that definitely wasn't a food baby making her pants tighter so a quick pharmacy pregnancy test confirmed her suspicions. she was two months pregnant. she quickly informed joesph but his feelings were mixed. sure, he was growing to really like chloe, he wasn't sure if he definitely wanted to start a family with her and for godsake he couldn't have her popping out a kid before they were even married! chloe seemed over the moon about it though and eventually her mood rubbed off on joesph and he quickly proposed. they were married about two months later but of course it was clear that this was a shotgun wedding. joesph's parents weren't exactly pleased with joesph, especially his father. but mrs rutherford convinced her husband to approve because hey, at least joesph was taking responsibility and looking after the mother of his baby. the wedding was a pretty big one since joesph's mother and chloe's mother had collaborated to plan everything. they got on surprisingly well and were both excited to have their children getting married. chloe was the first out of her sisters to get married but the other two had a feeling they were better off. penelope was just engaged and waiting for the right time to set the date. she and chloe's other sister lauren both smirked to themselves during the wedding ceromony, both secretly wondering how long this marriage would last. once joesph and chloe were married, chloe moved into joesph's big mansion and they settled into married life pretty quickly.
of course not long after they were getting settled, the big day came. yes, on the twentieth of july, mollie santana rutherford entered the world. she was the first child for joesph and chloe and they couldn't have been happier. well maybe joesph would have been a little bit happier if he'd actually had a little more time to get his head around all of this but he was still content and falling for chloe a little more each day. the next few years of mollie's life were quite content. her mother fussed over her to no end while her father went off and made a lot of money. he was slowly making his way up the ranks at his father's company since his father was getting older and getting ready to hand it over soon. this did mean that joesph was around less though but mollie was too young to really notice and while chloe was a little annoyed sometimes, he always made it up to her. when mollie was just three years old though, her mother gave birth to her second child, another girl named courtney. mollie didn't particularly like the attention moving away from her but she was still getting showered with love anyway so she didn't put up too much of a fuss although it was fun to poke courtney and make her cry sometimes. mollie had never been the sweetest child exactly.
for mollie, her childhood years just flew by. a few more years after courtney' birth, their brother joshua was born, completing the rutherford family. the three children grew up very happy in their big mansion with lots of room to run around in and always going out to nice big fancy dinners with their parents. most of the dinners were for the rutherford company people but still, they were good fun and there was always really nice food. the rutherford children were definitely brought up well. chloe no longer had her job at the cafe because why would she need a job when she had the money of joesph rutherford to spend? life was sweet. mollie and courtney grew up wearing gorgeous dresses and slipping on expensive shoes while their little brother's suit collection was much bigger than any other boy his age. he also had expensive clothes too. the children weren't necessarily spoiled brats or anything but they definitely learned to look down on those who were lower class and poor. mollie was the worst. she was the one who first started wrinkling her nose at the homeless people that they passed on the way to school and she was the one who begged to be moved to a private school to get away from the 'icky kids'. she got her way of course and soon all three rutherford children were attending a private primary school. just like joesph, joshua was expected take over the company one day so he often followed his dad around and into the study while the girls played dress ups.
by the time mollie was twelve, her father was now the head CEO of the rutherford's big company which was definitely something to brag about although mollie wasn't exactly sure what he did. it was something complicated apparently. one thing that mollie did know was that her father was rarely home anymore. those family dinners that used to be oh-so-frequent were slowly diminishing and while mollie tried to stay up to hear her father come home, he was usually so late that she was fast asleep when he crept in the front door. her mother didn't seem too concerned. she was revelling in this lifestyle as it was so different from her old life. finally she had money to spend, even if it technically wasn't hers. she didn't have a job anymore and hadn't had a job since that small cafe before she met joesph. why did she need a job? her hubby was rich and life was sweet. mollie, seeing her mother so happy, decided that her father coming home late all the time was perfectly normal so she brushed her worries aside and continued to relish in her lavish lifestyle. as she began high school, life was still awesome. mollie quickly fit in with the cool crowd and went out to lots of fun parties even as a freshman. it was the kind of life you see in tv shows and wonder if it's real. of course she had her dramas with boys and best frenemies but it was nothing like what was to come. nothing at all.
when mollie was sixteen years old, her little brother joshua ran into her room one night after school with a traumatised expression on his face. at the time, mollie was currently in the middle of straightening courtney's hair and was a bit annoyed at the interruption but when she saw josh's face, she knew something was wrong. it took a while to coax it out of him but eventually josh spilled. he'd gone to their father's company office to deliver a few papers that mr rutherford had asked him to, a small way to start getting him more involved in the company. josh had been sent up to his dad's office but his dad seemed otherwise occupied and had forgotten about josh. when josh opened the door (without knocking of course), he got quite the shock. in front of him was his father on the desk with his young blonde secretary in a very innapropriate position. joesph quickly jumped up to explain but by the time he got up joshua was already climbing into the elevator and pushing the shut button frantically. his two older sisters were horrified when they heard the news and courtney proceeded to burst into tears, wailing about how she didn't want their parents to get divorced. mollie quickly took control of the situation, deciding to keep things quiet because there was a possibility that it was a one off and they didn't need to worry. it wasn't though. mollie watched her father when he came home every night the next week and when she spotted the red lipstick badly hidden underneath his collar, she confronted him. he couldn't lie to his little baby girl and quietly admitted that he'd been having an affair but requested that she didn't tell her mother. well to hell with that. mollie waited until her mother seemed like she was in a good mood before finally sitting her down and breaking the news to her one afternoon with courtney and joshua seated with them in case their mother broke down.
she did of course. the moment joesph came home, despite it being way past midnight, chloe had no problem tearing down the stairs and screaming at her husband. that definitely woke up courtney and joshua who had both been asleep but mollie was awake and ready for it, creeping out to the staircase to watch the big confrontation which resulted in chloe screaming out that it was over and she was leaving. the next morning she exhaustedly told the three rutherford children to pack their things together because they were coming with her. joesph refused to let joshua leave though and since he was the only boy in the family and clearly needed a male influence in his life, he was stuck living with his father even though he loathed him and the two elder girls zipped up their thousands of suitcases with their designer clothes and followed their mother into a taxi, driving off into the sunset. well not quite. see here's the thing with the money. none of the girls had ever had jobs because they simply didn't need them. chloe had spent most of her own money when she was with joesph before using his money. but he shut off his credit cards that she owned as soon as she left and suddenly ms rutherford, mollie and courtney had no money. just like that. even the two girl's credit cards were shut off since they had chosen their mother over their father. so the three females ended up renting a small loft in a building downtown. it was tiny compared to their old estate and stank like cats. not to mention it was quite dusty but it was better than being homeless.
this tiny loft soon became mollie's official home and oh what a shock it was for her. the divorce was quite messy but quick. stupid chloe hadn't put her name on any of the things she and joesph had 'owned' together including the house so it all simply went to joesph. he kept the house, all the furniture and pretty much everything they'd had. chloe was left with absolutely nothing and same goes for mollie and courtney who only had what they'd stuffed into their suitcases. their mother had to get a job again now and it definitely exhausted her while mollie had to suddenly explain to her other rich friends why they couldn't go to her house anymore. eventually the money problem refused to get any better so mollie and courtney were forced to sell a couple of their gorgeous, designer clothes which had them both in tears. still, it was for the better. eventually mollie's friends decided that since she was poor now, she was no longer worthy of being their friend so she dropped down the social ladder and eventually found herself into the trashy crowd. they were the kids who went to the trashy parties and got completely off their face and most were into some sort of hard drug and often skipped school. also, a lot of them were quite poor like mollie. they were also a lot less bitchy than mollie's old friends and willing to let a new kid into their group.
this new group definitely wasn't a good influence on mollie at all though. as the next few weeks and months went on, mollie found herself getting more and more disruptive in class to please her new friends. it was also a good outlet for her anger at her father whom she hadn't spoken to since the day she, courtney and their mother left the big rutherford mansion. she'd left a couple of angry and very explicit messages on his voicemail cursing him and demanding that he unlock the credit cards so they could buy some food and not starve to death in this hellhole. there was also a few mentions of what a heartless bastard he was for breaking her mother's heart too of course. he never returned the calls of course, not that mollie expected or wanted him too though. she just wanted him to know how cruel he was. there was a small part of her that kept hoping he would have a change of heart and prove himself to be a decent man but that was useless. this made mollie furious of course and as time went by her anger only grew as she watched her mother spiral downhill even more and her younger sister becoming more and more reserved. with no real way to channel her anger properly, mollie found herself acting out as much as possible in class now. she was always in detention for starting fights too. her bitchy streak was somehow even more prominent now that she was no longer in the elite crowd and she became even more agressive. to be honest, it was partly insecurities too. she didn't want to seem weak just because she was poor now so she did everything she could to draw attention herself and her loud personality rather than her unfortunate choice of housing.
by some work of miracles, mollie actually managed to graduate from high school eventually. despite the fact that by her senior year she had managed to earn the bitchy slut reputation, she was still very ambitious and knew what she wanted to do. she wanted to make a lot of money and then sue her father or find a way to destroy his company so he could see what it was like to watch his life fall to pieces like she had. she worked hard in her final year, despite skipping many classes to go get high and drunk and not to mention if she was in class she would end up in detention within the first ten minutes at least. she passed her exams though and managed to graduate, just. her next step? college of course. everyone knows you have the most fun in college anyway. so last year she began her first year at college and what a year it was! she immediately made a name for herself just like she had in high school but this new reputation, once again, wasn't so flash. she still kept in touch with a lot of her old friends which meant she was still hanging out with some very trashy people but they were good company and she could trust them unlike she could trust those rich bitches who ditched her as soon as she lost her money. so in her freshman year at college mollie partied it up hard and was pretty much exactly the same as she was in her final years of high school and that was loud, violent and the one who never knew exactly when to shut her mouth.
now it's her second year of college and mollie is far from the pretty little rich girl who entered high school several years ago. she's slightly trashy, extremely slutty and lost her virginity about half way through her junior year of high school. she's still a very angry person and is yet to cure her rage blackouts but she prefers it that way. at least people can be scared of her for a reason. however, at nineteen years of age she is still single and hasn't had a steady boyfriend since she was fifteen and that only lasted a few months. it seems that ever since she moved into that small downtown loft and began partying and having random hook-ups, she just hasn't been able to find a guy to stick with. it doesn't help that she's very distrustful of guys now and refuses to get too close to them in case they turn around and do what her father her did to her mother aka break her fragile heart into a million pieces and leave her with nothing. ah, a former rich girl with daddy isses. she's definitely one of a kind isn't she?

The one thing Nina had to admit to herself was that no matter how annoyed she was getting with Robbie right now, no matter how many insults he'd thrown at her in the past several minutes, she was still enjoying herself. It was kind of fun having this weird banter passed back and forth. Well, fun wasn't really the word Nina was looking for. More like... different. Well that wasn't much use either but it fit more than fun. It was different and maybe that was what was good about it. She wasn't just sitting around moping alone. Robbie had sparked something in her and although normally she probably would have just blushed and left when Robbie found her, instead something inside of her had made her stay. Maybe it was the way he seemed to just assume that she was some lame prude that made her angry. That made her want to prove him wrong. God knows why she actually cared about what Robbie really thought. She barely knew him so his opinion really shouldn't have mattered to Nina. Somehow though, it did.
It wasn't like she had a crush on him or anything, that wasn't it at all. Nina knew that much. Sure, he was kind of hot in a scruffy sort of way but he was too rude. Nina was a hopeless romantic and she was looking for a Prince Charming, not a Common Jerk. No thanks. "You think I don't know that? You've pointed it out several times, you know." See? There he was with those insulting remarks again. It wasn't that the comment was insulting but the way he said it clearly insinuated that he was intending to insult. Nina opened her mouth to respond but closed it again when Robbie continued again. Finally he stopped speaking for a bit and Nina sighed. "Well if it's so boring, go entertain yourself with someone else then." she said, waving her hand towards the exit of the Auditorium. Surely there was someone else he could go and entertain for the rest of lunchtime. "And come on, all the time? You've known me for like what, fifteen minutes?" Nina scoffed slightly, rolling her eyes at Robbie.
"And it might even make you a little mysterious. You're not mysterious when you blush all the time,"
Any guesses what happened when Robbie said that? No need for three, you'll get it in one. That's right, Nina blushed. Her already rosy cheeks heated up and she ducked her head in embarrassment for a second. When she looked up, she exhaled heavily and then glared at Robbie. "You're enjoying this immensely, aren't you?" Nina hated the fact that every nasty thing she threw at him just rolled off his back like water. It was impossible to actually insult him without being mocked right back. Couldn't he just humour her a little? This was Nina, who rarely said a bad word about anyone. Surely any insult she threw at anyone should be taken seriously and not mocked. Not by Robbie though. He was hopeless. "You do realize that that's never going to happen?" Nina gave a half-smile and shrugged. "I can dream, can't I?" she said lightly before rolling her eyes at his next comment. "Well don't be too sure at your assumption of me but whatever." It was hopeless trying to argue with him but for some reason Nina kept trying anyway. Stupid girl. "And I have a sense of humour, thank you very much! Maybe I just don't feel like finding humour in anything right now." And suddenly something in her voice and eyes changed and you could see that maybe, just maybe she wasn't alright. Hopefully Robbie would see something there and realise that she really wasn't in the mood for laughing. She hadn't been in the mood for laughing for quite a while now.
Robbie seemed keen to keep pushing every single one of Nina's buttons though, clearly not caring about how she was probably feeling right now. "Yeah, how could I forget? You were here to sing to that invisible audience." Augh, he'd brought that up that embarrassing moment again. Nina was definitely regretting her decision to come in here to sing today but she'd needed to let off some steam and had been hoping to do some thinking. Well that hadn't gone according to plan then. Raising a sarcastic eyebrow at Robbie, Nina spoke, "That was me. And you were smoking your lungs away on a cancer-stick." Nina flashed a quick smirk at Robbie. Hah, this was sort of fun after all, this odd banter. "But I don't think that means you can't leave. Didn't you say I was the rudest guy you've talked to all year?" Nina smiled sweetly and nodded. "Yeah, and it's extremely true." She wasn't the least bit sorry for that comment. Why should she be? It was true. Watching Robbie's solemn expression, Nina let out a short laugh. "Yeah, I doubt you will." she muttered, half under her breath, ignoring Robbie's snigger. "You haven't given me much reason thus far to assume anything else." Nina sent Robbie another small glare, not intended to do too much harm but a glare all the same. Y"ou haven't given me much time to prove elsewise anyway," she shot back. She frowned as she saw him lighting yet another cigarette. Well now was a good time as ever to leave.
And now for the best part of the conversation. Seeing how he would react when she tried to leave. Nina brushed her hands over her uniform lightly and prepared to leave when she was stopped. Now, Nina wasn't surprised by Robbie calling out to her. But she was surprised when she felt his hand grasp her arm. Uh, personal space much? And why exactly was he smiling like that? Nina was a little worried. Where had his cocky grin gone? Not that Nina minded but it was a little off-putting now. "Where the hell do you think you're going?" Nina quickly pulled herself together in time to answer. With a hint of a smile, Nina tugged her arm from Robbie's grip lightly, and placed her hands on her hips. "Well, it's almost the end of lunch and I should probably head off soon anyway." Shrugging, Nina continued, "Why? Is there a reason I should stay?"
