edward pearson was one of the most eligible bachelors in london during the eighties. he was a gentleman and apart of one of the most affluent families in the london social scene. debutantes would flirt childishly with him at gatherings and balls, yet never did edward show any particular interest to their silly high school girl behaviour. after being wrapped up in cotton wool for his entire life and forced to behave like a well brought up gentleman should, he wasn't looking for someone who was just like him. melanie bassett was always in among those girls yet she never paid any attention to the handsome edward pearson. no attention was paid to her either by edward due to the fact she was a seemingly devoted catholic good girl. the most provocative thing she did was pose for her mothers fashion line as a model. it wasn't long before the leggy blonde became a fairly well known supermodel, something one wouldn't expect the knee length skirt wearing girl to become. in the summer of eighty-three, both melanie and edward happened to be at a party held by a few socialites in london. after observing each other all night the pair eventually ended up in a bedroom on the second floor of the townhouse, all their morals being thrown away. it was as though hell had frozen over when they were seen holding hands and acting like a couple in the society pages in the next few months. two years later edward proposed on top of the eiffel tower during their annual trip to france. it was much too corny for melanie to refuse the their parents began planning your typical million dollar wedding for the newly engaged couple. as expected, the wedding went as expected. perfectly, not a blonde hair on melanie's hair was out of place and just as she'd wanted, everyone gasped when she walked down the aisle. they disappeared for their honeymoon, going on a cruise around the world and of course having a lot of alone time. however due to the fact melanie was focused on her career and edward being taught by his father to take over the multi million dollar family business, children was the last thing of their minds.
at the time when children did come into the picture, neither of them were ready. melanie was at the top of her modelling career when one of the designers started screaming at her backstage because she was unable to fit into a dress which had been perfectly fine just months earlier. her older sister forced melanie to take a pregnancy test and the blonde burst out crying at the little pink plus sign, screaming that her life was over. edward was overjoyed at the news he would finally be a father, something which melanie disliked greatly. still being a strong catholic, the woman completely disagreed about having an abortion and tried to have a more positive outlook on the situation. soon enough it was discovered she was pregnant with twins. melanie didn't have a preference as to what gender her future children would be yet edward desperately wanted to have two boys. anticipation arose in the next nine months when the day finally came. at four o'clock in the morning on june twentieth, nineteen ninety-two, tristin edward pearson was born. five minutes later at four oh five, came sophie jayne pearson. each had those typical pearson hazel eyes which were so open and aware of everything around them. for only a moment was edward pearson slightly disappointed they'd had a girl also, but it didn't take long for him to fall in love with both of his children. not wanting their son and daughter to grow up in london, melanie and edward purchased a rather large country home just forty-five minutes away from the centre of london. melanie had been hoping to return back to modelling after the birth yet she adored her children so incredibly much that she couldn't bare to do such a thing. from almost the very moment they were born, sibling rivalry was present between the pearson twins. if sophie was crying, tristin would cry louder. if sophie had a toy tristin wanted, tristin would sure as hell have it. like all sets of twins, the oldest usually had more influence over the youngest and would practically control them in every aspect of their lives. tristin was controlling and independent whereas sophie was vulnerable and needy.
no one seemed to be able to make sense of tristin's competitive nature and the fact he had to be better than his younger sister at everything. you could say that tristin had this insane need to control those weaker and more vulnerable than him, so therefore, sophie was perfect. the fighting turned physical when the twins entered elementary school. even sophie talking to one of tristin's friends would cause him to trip her over, which would result in her hitting him and in the end, the teachers would be tugging the pair off of each other. for a while, he had the advantage over his younger sister. there was no way in the world that sophie pearson would stand up to her older brother or be the one to start the fight. tristin could do whatever the hell he wanted and get away with it. sure it would score him an hour or so sitting in a corner on the first floor of the pearson household, but the fact he had a considerably large amount of power over his younger sister made everything worth it. eventually tristin's luck ran out for him when his mother stormed into his bedroom and started screaming at him for biting sophie. now tristin had no idea what the hell melanie was talking about until sophie skipped past him with a cheeky little grin on her lips. for a short period of time, tristin remained in the dark about how he managed to get put in the corner at least three times a week for biting his sister. it wasn't until one day when he was hiding in her closet and saw the little blonde bite her wrist that tristin understood. honestly, although sophie could have figured out a better way to get her brother in trouble, tristin had to commend his sister. of course sophie's technique went out the window when tristin did exactly the same and the pair of them ended up fighting, the truth coming out. not knowing what to do with her children, melanie hired a piano tutor for the pair of them. tristin generally liked the piano, yet was jealous of his sister who was able to just let her fingers pass over the ivory keys of the pearson's grand piano with ease. tristin's problem was that he was too focused and determined to do well. once the eight year old was able to let go of his anger, the piano and sheet music came easily to him.
it wasn't often that tristin would cause actual damage on his sister, so it was strange that an afternoon in april would change all that. the ten year olds had been walking home from their bus stop; sophie jumping over the cracks in the pavement and tristin looking down at his feet. as usual, an opportunity came along for tristin to trip his sister and so he took it. the blonde fell onto her knees and sat on the sidewalk for a few minutes trying not to cry as her brother continued to walk. over the past few years, the twins lost that identical aspect they had to them, tristin's hair was growing darker and sophie's growing lighter. the next day tristin was dragged into sophie's room by his furious mother and was forced to look at the large, blotchy bruise on his sister's leg. no matter how many times he denied that he could have done that, melanie wouldn't hear it. mrs. pearson reconsidered when she discovered her daughter had a temperature and took her to the doctors. the next sunday after the family returned from mass at their local church, melanie received a phone call. tristin and sophie were sitting in the living room finishing their homework when they heard their mother start crying. at a family meeting with their doctor, tristin was told his sister had acute promyelocytic leukemia. not being too sure of what that meant being only ten at the time, the doctor informed him in private that it meant his sister was going to be very sick and there was a chance she wouldn't live. although tristin put on the whole "i hate my annoying sister" act, he really did love sophie and hearing that she might not live scared him to death. not wanting sophie to worry or freak out, tristin tried to continue treating the girl exactly how he had before. yet he decided not to follow through with that plan when he walked into sophie's hospital room to find her crying her eyes out. after he helped her stop the pair of them seemed to make a silent pact not to speak of it again. in the next few months, the pair became quite close and you wouldn't believe they were the same people.
after a while, it was getting all too hard for melanie and edward. they couldn't handle looking after both tristin and sophie. the decision was made to send tristin to an affluent boarding school up north in the countryside. at first tristin was annoyed towards his parents yet quickly decided this was a blessing, he wouldn't have to put up with them anymore. tristin fit in well at his new school, making friends quickly. he and sophie would exchange letters as often as they could. it would take an idiot to actually believe the positive words in sophie's letters, yet tristin forced himself to believe was his sister told him. however if he didn't hear anything from her in a week, the boy would call the hospital and make sure everything was alright. this was the time he became extremely protective over his sister. melanie and edward didn't bother to contact their son and weren't even there to pick him up at the start of holidays and breaks. it wouldn't have bothered him if they were with sophie, but neither of them were. just after their thirteenth birthday, the doctors announced sophie's cancer was in remission. the entire family was overjoyed at the news; although they knew the cancer had a chance of coming back, no one seemed to care about future possibilities. tristin was taken out of boarding school and the pearson twins were enrolled at a local private school. sophie was excited to go to "real school" after three years of being homeschooled and tristin was just happy not to be living in a school anymore. seeing her school uniform practically hang off over her bony limbs, tristin automatically took on the role of being the person who would personally give people a piece of his mind if anyone gave her trouble. due to the fact he didn't receive any trouble at the new school, the thirteen year old assumed sophie wouldn't either. it wasn't until his sister came home three hours later after school one day, covered in various foods, that tristin figured out that things weren't going so well. instead of ignoring this, tristin would let sophie hang out with he and his friends, this clearing things up. the bitchiness seemed to stop when tristin repeatedly turned all of those girls down when they asked him on dates and to dances.
things improved dramatically when tristin and his sister moved into college (high school). he didn't had to worry about his sister being bullied anymore because sophie finally looked healthy and even had a head of healthy blonde hair to prove it. finally, everything seemed to be going perfect for tristin. however after about a year, tristin was sitting in his english class when a girl ran into the class room and said there was something wrong with sophie. knowing what it probably was, tristin followed the girl to the girls bathroom to see sophie throwing up blood in the toilet. although scared shitless, tristin kept a calm composure and told sophie's friend that they were going to be leaving. he picked up his younger sister, took her to their car and drove her to the hospital. after what seemed like years sitting in the hospital waiting room, the doctors told him that sophie's cancer had come back. it was well known by the family that the cancer would most likely be more aggressive second time around and that they shouldn't expect her to survive. edward pearson had stormed off back to the office and made the choice to work non stop for the next forty eight hours. melanie drove home and drunk numerous amounts of alcohol present in the family home. knowing that if he left, sophie wouldn't have anyone else, tristin stayed by her side and held her hand. being unable to reassure her or stay positive, sophie was the one smiling and giving him reassurance. once the family had recovered as much as they were going to, they searched for anything which would help sophie. eventually edward came across a new treatment which had been successful in quite a few cases. after speaking to sophie's doctors about this, it was suggested that this new treatment would be their best option. however there was always a catch and this was that it was only available in certain parts of america. tristin hated the fact that after finally finding a school where he'd made good friends, he was going to have to move away. over the years he'd found it easier and easier to hide his emotions, so hiding this was a piece of cake for the seventeen year old.
confident that this treatment would help sophie get better and keep her away from a grave and headstone in the local cemetery, tristin accepted the fact he was moving to america. he'd avoided the hospital after sophie got sick because he knew that he would most likely let his guard down and make his sister feel guilty. one night, melanie pearson came home sobbing and screaming at everyone in her way, making it clear something had happened. after hours of persuasion, the woman told tristin that sophie didn't want to have the treatment and twisted her daughter's words, saying that sophie just wanted to give up. edward had decided to let her go and do what sophie wanted, something that made tristin hate his father in a sense. the word had spread around at school the tristin was unable to go anywhere without a sympathetic glance. even his friends acted differently around him, mainly because they knew he was the brother of a most likely soon to be dead seventeen year old. after hearing a confident belief that sophie would die within a year by a few senior students, tristin decided to go to the hospital. he'd figured out exactly what he was going to say but seeing sophie in the bed, knitting some ridiculous beanie, made him forget everything. after walking around the room for at least five minutes, tristin got angry and ended up bursting into tears, something he didn't believe he'd ever do. there was still a bit of faith that the vulnerable six year old was still there in sophie who would follow her brothers every order. it didn't take much persuasion from tristin for sophie to agree into having the treatment. it was decided that edward would take over the pearson's multi-million dollar real estate business office in seattle and sophie would receive treatment in the hospital there. tristin had mixed feelings; he didn't want to leave his friends and life in london but would do so for his sister. and melanie, she was just pleased that her daughter had decided to do the "right thing". less than a month later, a large group of the pearson's friends and family were gathered at the london airport saying goodbye to the four. the family purchased a large townhouse in seattle and enrolled tristin into a reasonably adequate high school. sophie however was immediately put into hospital and began intense sessions of chemotherapy treatment. not wanting to go around bald, melanie bought her daughter a wig which near resembled her daughter's exact hair colour. it was either the wig or beanie that sophie wore. bitter and distant, also not wanting to be known as the guy with the dying sister, tristin is ready to start school...whoop whoop! yeah i’ll finish this later okay?
