edward pearson was one of the most eligible bachelors in london during the eighties. he was a gentleman and apart of one of the most affluent families in the london social scene. debutantes would flirt childishly with him at gatherings and balls, yet never did edward show any particular interest to their silly high school girl behaviour. after being wrapped up in cotton wool for his entire life and forced to behave like a well brought up gentleman should, he wasn't looking for someone who was just like him. melanie bassett was always in among those girls yet she never paid any attention to the handsome edward pearson. no attention was paid to her either by edward due to the fact she was a seemingly devoted catholic good girl. the most provocative thing she did was pose for her mothers fashion line as a model. it wasn't long before the leggy blonde became a fairly well known supermodel, something one wouldn't expect the knee length skirt wearing girl to become. in the summer of eighty-three, both melanie and edward happened to be at a party held by a few socialites in london. after observing each other all night the pair eventually ended up in a bedroom on the second floor of the townhouse, all their morals being thrown away. it was as though hell had frozen over when they were seen holding hands and acting like a couple in the society pages in the next few months. two years later edward proposed on top of the eiffel tower during their annual trip to france. it was much too corny for melanie to refuse the their parents began planning your typical million dollar wedding for the newly engaged couple. as expected, the wedding went as expected. perfectly, not a blonde hair on melanie's hair was out of place and just as she'd wanted, everyone gasped when she walked down the aisle. they disappeared for their honeymoon, going on a cruise around the world and of course having a lot of alone time. however due to the fact melanie was focused on her career and edward being taught by his father to take over the multi million dollar family business, children was the last thing of their minds.
at the time when children did come into the picture, neither of them were ready. melanie was at the top of her modelling career when one of the designers started screaming at her backstage because she was unable to fit into a dress which had been perfectly fine just months earlier. her older sister forced melanie to take a pregnancy test and the blonde burst out crying at the little pink plus sign, screaming that her life was over. edward was overjoyed at the news he would finally be a father, something which melanie disliked greatly. still being a strong catholic, the woman completely disagreed about having an abortion and tried to have a more positive outlook on the situation. soon enough it was discovered she was pregnant with twins. melanie didn't have a preference as to what gender her future children would be yet edward desperately wanted to have two boys. anticipation arose in the next nine months when the day finally came. at four o'clock in the morning on june twentieth, nineteen ninety-two, tristin edward pearson was born. five minutes later at four oh five, came sophie jayne pearson. each had those typical pearson hazel eyes which were so open and aware of everything around them. for only a moment was edward pearson slightly disappointed they'd had a girl also, but it didn't take long for him to fall in love with both of his children. not wanting their son and daughter to grow up in london, melanie and edward purchased a rather large country home just forty-five minutes away from the centre of london. melanie had been hoping to return back to modelling after the birth yet she adored her children so incredibly much that she couldn't bare to do such a thing. from almost the very moment they were born, sibling rivalry was present between the pearson twins. if sophie was crying, tristin would cry louder. if sophie had a toy tristin wanted, tristin would sure as hell have it. like all sets of twins, the oldest usually had more influence over the youngest and would practically control them in every aspect of their lives. tristin was controlling and independent whereas sophie was vulnerable and needy.
the sibling rivalry didn't stop when they hit elementary school at one of london's most prestigious prep schools. it wasn't a rare occurrence that the teachers would be forced to literally pull the twins away from each other during recess due to the fact they were fighting. physical fights were bound to come sooner or later. if sophie was sitting on tristin's bed and refused to get off, well tristin would push her. of course this resulted in sophie having a broken thumb and tristin spending the next month without his precious cartoons. in order to get back at her brother, sophie would bite herself deliberately and run crying to her mother. as a result, melanie bought her daughter an incredibly large cat named chester, the grumpiest thing in the world. the "tristin bit me" story worked for a few months until tristin did the same thing. worried her children would god forbid become young people with absolutely no respect or self restraint, melanie forced them both to take piano lessons. sophie caught on easily, not focusing so much and just letting her fingers run across the pure white keys of the grand piano sitting in the pearson's music room. tristin however would bit his lip and focus so hard that he was tense and unable to just let the music flow. this caused him to practice more and therefore get a lot of his excess anger out. after a few years when both sophie and tristin had become rather accomplished pianists, the physical and verbal fights started again. sophie would never go near the family pool or slight river running at the back of their home because she was afraid her brother would chuck her in. she couldn't swim so that would be a complete disaster. no matter what melanie pearson tried, she couldn't stop the ridiculous sibling rivalry. the woman would try and build up sophie's confidence and persuade her to stand up to tristin. as per usual, the blonde would nod and skip off yet when the time came that tristin was pushing her around, sophie would merely allow him to have his own way and be pushed aside. giving up and acknowledging that sophie would always be the follower and tristin the leader, melanie merely accepted this and no longer bothered to interfere with the fights. there was always at least one light bruise present on sophie and tristin, that including teeth and fist marks. it was just known that the pearson twins didn't get along as well as others. of course they loved each other and on the rare occasion would get along, but generally they despised one another.
nothing had been different about that day in april. the pair had been walking home from school and tristin thought it would be funny to trip his already uncoordinated sister. so he stuck out that black polished school shoe of his and tripped sophie on the pavement. used to tripping over by now, sophie didn't make a fuss and just got up to run after her brother. the next day when melanie walked out in the morning, only tristin was sitting in front of the television. when she asked where sophie was, the ten year old shrugged and continued eating his cereal. melanie found her daughter still asleep in her bedroom and was alarmed to find a large blotchy purple bruise present on her scrawny leg. the woman walked out into the living room and started yelling at tristin before dragging him into sophie's bedroom so he could see what he apparently did to her. melanie wouldn't hear any of tristin's claims and sent him to his bedroom, the distressed mother then noticing her sleeping daughter had a high fever. none of it matching up, melanie took sophie to the doctors who suggested they should take some tests. three days after the tests were sent away, the pearson family got a phone call after coming back from the sunday mass at their local catholic church. it was revealed that sophie had been diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a cancer of both the blood and bone marrow. edward and melanie were crushed in the entire meaning of the word and called in doctors all over england to see their daughter. the older pearson twin knew something was wrong when his sister spent all her time in bed being looked over by doctors like she was some sort of specimen. soon enough sophie was admitted into the private hospital in london and began intense sessions of chemotherapy. this resulted in melanie pearson spending most of her nights at the hospital with her daughter, only drinking strong cups of coffee and sleeping in chairs. edward pearson was unable to witness his daughter in such a condition and spent most of his time at work, yet visiting the little girl during his lunch breaks. as both melanie and edward were caught up so many things, they were unable to look after tristin as well. and so the older twin was sent off to one of britain's most affluent all boys boarding schools in the country.
it would be a lie to say that sophie's relationship with her brother deteriorated during this time, the fact was it only made their relationship stronger. due to sophie's love of handwritten letters, the pair would write letters back and forth to each other. tristin's involved gifts of knee high socks and beanies to cover her bald head. sophie's curly writing would give words full of unrealistic optimism to her brother and ridiculous drawings of the haughty nurses and cocky doctors. countless times tristin would give painful bone marrow transfusions to his sister and blood, the then twelve year old knowing that it was only fair for him to suffer pain also, despite the fact sophie's was far more than his. there were periods of time that sophie secretly believed she wouldn't see tristin again when he went back to school but for everyone's sake, she kept that perky smile on her pale lips. in a place where each person is depressing and negative, the only way to survive is to have a positive attitude. sophie strongly believed that the only reason she didn't die within those first few years was because of that silly positive attitude of hers and strong desire to show up those cocky doctors with permanent frowns upon their faces. after three years, the blonde completed her last round of chemotherapy and just weeks later, her cancer was declared as being in remission. the girl was overjoyed and packed her bags within seconds to get out of that hospital. tristin was able to return back to live with his family and sophie was soon able to go to school with him. melanie pearson was one of those women who strongly believed every good thing in life was an act of god, so she believed what happened to sophie was a miracle. the relationship between sophie and tristin was that of best friends. they'd still have their fights but generally within five minutes, one or the other completely forgot about what they were fighting about and the pair shrugged it off. yet still tristin was the leader and sophie the pushover. if he wanted to do something and sophie didn't, they would always end up doing what tristin wanted. after spending three years in an all boys boarding school, tristin had toughened up and had developed quite a temper. if anyone rubbed off on him the wrong way, they could expect a punch and possibly a broken nose. the boy would often end up in the headmasters office and if it wasn't for the generous donations from the pearson family, he would probably have been expelled already. however most of the people he beat up where those who gave sophie a hard time.
not having much social interaction with people her age and being schooled by a private tutor for the past three years, sophie was considered as being slightly socially awkward. upon her return back at school, the blonde had tried making friends with people whom her mother wanted yet those girls would simply laugh and walk in the other direction. the girls, who were daughters of socialites and businessmen, would tease sophie about her weight and spread all sorts of rumours about her. it wasn't rare that the blonde would come home crying after having food thrown at her, suggesting she eat something. you could say tristin was a hot commodity at school and it was only after he rejected all these girls to the up and coming school dance, that they left sophie alone. of course there were still the snide comments and giggles, but sophie learned to ignore it. her only friends were those in the school choir and marching band. boys at school never noticed the shy and awkward blonde with knobby knees and out of sympathy, tristin would sit at home with her watching movies and eating ice cream on the nights of school dances and other social events. college (or high school) wasn't expected to be much different, yet sophie still continued to be optimistic like she had done in the past few years. she was convinced that she'd be given a new start. people wouldn't know who she was so therefore, sophie pearson could be anyone who she wanted to be. no one would know she'd once had cancer or got food thrown at her every day for the past few years of her life. from the second tristin and edward walked into their new school, all eyes had been on them. mainly because tristin was well known by many of the girls from gossip which had travelled across schools all over london. sophie however was just the pretty blonde who stood at his side, the girl making it very clear that they were siblings because it wasn't rare people just assumed they were going out, which was disgusting in sophie's opinion. instead of being avoided by people, her peers actually sat beside sophie during class and asked to go for coffee with them after school. tristin would generally interfere when jerks would try and talk up his sister yet tried to stay out of things when actually nice guys talked to his sister.
although the now sixteen year old had a full head of thick blonde hair and sparkling hazel eyes, she still saw the thin and sickly girl in the hospital. her low self esteem prevented her from actually accepting to go out to the movies with boys and she'd always hide her fears by being "just friends" with them. something she never admitted to was that sophie tended to avoid becoming close to people. she'd seen what her having cancer had done to people who loved her and there was also that tiny fear in the back of her mind that the cancer would come back. the way she saw it, if she was dating a guy who loved her, it would hurt him if he had to see her the way she was in hospital. the male population at sophie's school soon enough accepted she wasn't going to date any of them so they seemed to settle on just being friends. by december when she was sixteen, sophie even began to believe things were going too well for her. she had amazing friends and was rarely teased at school. her luck ran out when the blonde was sitting in her sixth period maths class and had the familiar feeling like she was going to throw up. the girl ran out of class and into the bathroom, coughing up blood into the toilet. a friend of hers found tristin who scared a few girls when he burst into the girls bathroom. he helped his sister to their car and drove her to the hospital where she underwent all kinds of tests. within just a few hours it was confirmed that sophie's cancer had returned. the pearson's asked not to have any information sugar coated for their benefit and the doctors told them the leukaemia was more aggressive second time around and it was unlikely sophie would survive. edward pearson had stormed off back to the office and made the choice to work non stop for the next forty eight hours. melanie drove home and drunk numerous amounts of alcohol present in the family home. instead of running away, tristin stayed with sophie holding her hand. sophie knew her brother well enough to realize he was scared and she was the one telling him everything was going to be alright. once the family had recovered as much as they were going to, they searched for anything which would help sophie. eventually edward came across a new treatment which had been successful in quite a few cases. after speaking to sophie's doctors about this, it was suggested that this new treatment would be their best option. however there was always a catch and this was that it was only available in certain parts of america.
by this point in time, sophie had long ago accepted she was going to die sooner or later and there was no reason to fear death. she hated the fact it hurt her family and friends. melanie pearson had screamed at sophie when the sixteen year old stated she didn't want to go ahead with this treatment. the woman wasn't ready to let go of her daughter and there was no way she would without a fight. edward gave sophie a choice, out of love for the girl. tristin however, hadn't spoken to her since those first few nights in hospital. he'd turned up after school one day with cards and stuffed toys from their friends and ended up doing something no one would expect tristin pearson of all people to do. he burst into tears and begged sophie to try. even though he was sitting at her bedside with his head in his hands, tristin was still the leader and sophie the follower. he wanted her to try and to go ahead with this treatment, so she told him she would. sophie knew that it would hurt him even more if she just gave up and that was something the sixteen year old didn't want to be known for, the girl who gave up. it was decided that edward would take over the pearson's multi-million dollar real estate business office in seattle and sophie would receive treatment in the hospital there. tristin had mixed feelings; he didn't want to leave his friends and life in london but would do so for his sister. and melanie, she was just pleased that her daughter had decided to do the "right thing". less than a month later, a large group of the pearson's friends and family were gathered at the london airport saying goodbye to the four. the family purchased a large townhouse in seattle and enrolled tristin into a reasonably adequate high school. sophie however was immediately put into hospital and began intense sessions of chemotherapy treatment. not wanting to go around bald, melanie bought her daughter a wig which near resembled her daughter's exact hair colour. it was either the wig or beanie that sophie wore.
not long after her chemotherapy started, sophie met ivan joyce. it wasn't an odd thing for the seventeen year old to sneak down into the hospital waiting room, recieve her crossword puzzles from the receptionist and simply watch people. one night however, ivan joyce entered the waiting room in an emotional wreck. instead of avoiding his gaze, the girl couldn't keep her eyes from him, however she regretted it when he walked over. instead of being yelled at, the pair talked for hours, until sophie was dragged back to her hospital room by a haughty and frustrated looking nurse. she didn't expect to see ivan joyce again but the next morning he knocked awkwardly on her door with a small smile on his face. it didn't take long for sophie to warm up to the boy and they were soon best friends, the best friend she'd ever had. eventually her feelings for him weren't just that of friends, but more. she'd always catch herself staring for too long or blushing wildly at a simple compliment. for that entire time, sophie believed that ivan was someone who helped keep her alive when she was sick. he gave her hope and that was exactly what she needed. almost a year after being admitted to the hospital in seattle, she was deemed once again by doctors, as in remission. it was strange to be able to go for a walk in the park or to the movies with ivan, instead of sitting at home watching television or when she was in hospital, in her room. a year was how long it took to find the courage to tell ivan how she felt about him, however before she got the chance to, edward and melanie announced that the family would be returning back to england. although she tried to be optimistic, it was difficult for the eighteen year old. she didn't see the point in telling ivan how she felt if they were going to be in different countries. so she left the country with her family after pointless promises of keeping in touch to ivan.
for the first few months, keeping in touch was the last of her worries. she was focused on regaining those friendships and her new school, however small texts were sent to ivan, yet they were weeks apart. eventually, the communication stopped. sophie didn't really know why, but it did and she accepted that. she got on with her life and graduated from high school, then started to attend university. her aspiration was to become a nurse, hence that's what she focused on studying. tristin and sophie both opposed to living on campus so they invested in an apartment within walking distance of the university. the first few months were going well for sophie, tristin didn't care too much about his education yet he managed to float on by with good grades. she was always so focused on doing well and one night tristin persuaded her to go out clubbing with him. the blonde wasn't actually that much of a prude once she got a bit of vodka into her although it didn't lead her into a very good position. tristin was doing some girl in a storage cupboard and sophie went outside alone to get some fresh air. standing there in her tight little dress seemed to attract the attention of a few drunk males hanging out the back of the bar. it was a surprise to her when one suddenly grabbed her and pushed her up against a wall. three grown men against a thin eighteen year old wasn't exactly a fair fight. her attempts to shove them away didn't go the way she had hoped and immediately flashes of newspaper headlines about her body being discovered in a dumpster flashed through her mind. that was when she really started freaking out. the men tried to keep her from screaming but suddenly they were the ones shrieking and sophie was being pulled inside by someone.
this will continue when michelle makes her man. [/ul][/blockquote][/size][/sup]
